In order to successfully run a business in Dubai, new or established businesses must file relevant documentation and follow legal procedures. Obtaining a business license is one of the most important parts of setting up a business in Dubai. Every business must have a relevant license, whether it is industrial, commercial, or professional, and the renewal process is usually an annual one. How to renew a trade license in Dubai is described in this article.

What is the best way to determine when your license needs to be renewed?

You can easily find out when your business license needs to be renewed. You can determine your license expiration date by using these options:

  1. The license approval expiration date appears on your original license paperwork, and thus when your license needs to be renewed.
  2. Your company formation agent may be able to help you if that is not possible. Those who have set up their businesses in a free zone should contact the area’s free zone authority.

If you do not renew your license within 30 days after it expires, fines will apply.

Renewal process:

  1. Valid documents and paperwork:
It is important to have all the necessary documents and paperwork in order when renewing your trade license in Dubai. For this process, you will need the following documents:
    a) Tenancy Contract:  A tenancy contract that has been approved by Ejari is a crucial document necessary for the renewal process. An application can be rejected if the contract is not valid one month before renewal.
    b) Photocopy of Passports: All business partners involved must provide passport photocopies with their applications.
    c) Photocopy of Trade License: If you are applying for a new trade license, please attach a photocopy of your old one. The renewal of your UAE business permit is impossible without the original permit.
  2. Application for trade license renewal.
The BR/1 application form must be completed in order to renew your business license. Your business partners will have to sign the form after you type it out and fill in the relevant details. Before submitting this form for approval to the Department of Economic Development (DED), you must attach the following documents.
  3. I received the payment voucher and the payment.
DED will review the attached documents and approve or reject your application after receiving your application. Your application will be verified by the DED and a payment voucher will be sent to you so that you can pay the renewal fee. Your license will only be renewed once the payment has been received by the DED. Upon receiving your voucher, pay the DED the required amount. Once this is done, your trade license will be renewed and valid, and the process is complete.

Most processes related to business setup in Dubai are simple, easy to understand, and easy to navigate thanks to Dubai’s business-friendly policies. In the event that you fail to renew your trade license at the right time, your business may be blacklisted or banned altogether, which could result in heavy penalties up to AED 5,000.
