Checking the Status of Your Driving Licence
- Visit the official website of your state’s transportation department. Depending on the state, the website may differ. Make sure you’re on the right website.
- There is a link to “Check your driving licence status”. To find out more, click the link and enter your date of birth, DL number, and state.
- You can also check your Indian driving licence status online by visiting the Sarathi website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- On the Sarathi website, under “National Register (DL) Queries,” you will find an option called “Status of Licence.”
- The “Status of Licence” option requires you to enter your date of birth, your DL number, and your state. Click “Submit” after entering the details.

Once you have cleared your driving test, the RTO dispatches your driving licence roughly after 2 weeks. Therefore, you should not check the status of your Indian driving license every day. When a driver registers their motor vehicle, they receive a Driving Licence Registration Certificate (RC). Here are some facts about your driving license
- From the time you apply for the driving licence, it will take around a month for it to arrive at your doorstep. You must have someone authorized to accept the package on your behalf, even if you are not home.
- RTOs and the government are constantly working to digitize the process of checking your driving license status online. If you don’t have a Learner’s License (LL), you should get one.
